Born in Nanchong, Sichuan Province, in 1963 and originally from Hunan, Mingjun Luo lives and works between Switzerland and China.
From 1979 to 1983, she studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Hunan Normal University, where she subsequently taught as an assistant from 1983 to 1987. In 1985, she co-founded the avant-garde artist group “Zero Group” with other artists. In 1987, she moved to Switzerland.
Since 1987, she has exhibited regularly in Switzerland, across Europe, and in China. She received the Young Artist Prize of her region of residence in 1994 and 1996, followed by the Bern Women Artists Prize in 2008. Her major solo exhibitions include the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Bienne (2008), the Musée d’Art de Pully (2016), and the Musée Jurassien des Arts in Moutier, Switzerland (2020).
Her notable group exhibitions include At the Summit of Color – Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou Collection at the Beijing Minsheng Art Museum; The Way of Writing at the Museo Correr in Venice; Chinese Contemporary Art – Sigg Collection at SongEun ArtSpace in Seoul; Across Permafrost, Desert and Glacier – 5th Global Chinese Artists Exhibition at the He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen; The Beauty of Paper at the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire de Neuchâtel; the inaugural collection exhibition of the Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne; Fundamental – 5th Mediations Biennale in Poznań; Currents of the Two Lakes – Contemporary Art of Hubei and Hunan 1985–2009 at the Guangdong Museum of Art; as well as The Spirit of Abstraction: Thirty Years of Chinese Abstract Art, curated by Gao Minglu.
Living for many years between Eastern and Western cultures, her work explores in depth the notions of personal and cultural identity.
